HR STUDIES

On November, 6th 2012 the First European High Resolution study workshop was organised in Italy, at the Milan Malpensa airport, in the framework of the European Partnership for Action Against Cancer (EPAAC): cancer registries from 11 EU countries participated, together with representatives of the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) and of the Joint Research Centre (JRC, European Commission).
The participants expressed a shared interest to work for the development of an EU HR project as a group, highlighting the need to involve clinicians in the study process. Following this first workshop, the HR study activity proceeded with further meetings and contacts between researchers and clinicians, to agree on the start of a new round of European HR studies on patients with breast, colorectal, lung cancers, and skin melanoma and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma mostly diagnosed in 2011-2014.

Besides classical HR data on diagnostic investigations, it was established that the investigation scope would also include clinical and pathological stage, bio-molecular tumour characterisation, and type of treatments (including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy and surgery), the feasibility of studying further factors potentially influencing prognosis (co-morbidity at diagnosis, body weight, height, body mass index, smoking habits, and performance status).

The Joint Transnational Call for Proposals 2013 (JTC-2013) contributed to launch the new European round of HR studies on breast and colorectal cancers diagnosed in 11 cancer registries in 7 European countries (HIGHCARE project).
Furthermore, additional cancer registries agreed to contribute on a voluntary basis to both breast and colorectal studies and further HR studies (i.e., on lung cancer, skin melanoma and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma).

Overall, 52 European population-based cancer registries from 13 EU countries are involved.
